I think a good starting point for discussing mysticism is the idea that a mystical experience is supposed to represent a blurring or dissolution of the boundaries between the self and others (or indeed everything), resulting in a union with something. In religious terms, this something is often taken to be God; for non-religious traditions, it can be a breaking down of distinctions between things, such that life is a continuous whole.

I'm looking for a book that touches me in the way The Road did, that evokes desperation and melancholy. Perhaps a bit less optimistic. Anyone have recommendations?
I suggest you try McCarthy's Border Trilogy, which I hold to be superior to The Road and certainly more melancholy, particularly the second book The Crossing. Here are a few lines from All The Pretty Horses:
"He imagined the pain of the world to be like some formless parasitic being seeking out the warmth of human souls wherein to incubate and he thought he knew what made one liable to its visitations. What he had not known was that it was mindless and so had no way to know the limits of those souls and what he feared was that there might be no limits."

I'm still disappointed with the result but the Pats didn't deserve to win. Not only did they not control the game enough to have the majority of the clock, mistakes like the Safety and the dropped catches at the end cost them dear. Moreover, I know that Gronk was calling for the ball but both he and Brady should have known better with the injury and the coverage. Still, you can't detract from how calm Eli was all game (and throughout the post-season) and it sure looks unlikely that his brother will equal his ring count now.
Any thoughts on the draft? Everyone is talking about Luck and RG3 but Blackmon is the pick for me.

The AFC game was tough to watch at the end but the Ravens really blew it, although partly due to some pretty special Safety plays. The Pats' secondary looked porous at best but I suppose the Giants aren't likely to be able to limit Brady in the same way, notwithstanding their DL. How about Gronkowski folding his ankle and lower leg the wrong way but still coming back out?

I love the description of Pierre-Paul and Umenyiora as the holy terror.
At some stage can you give your views on the draft? Shouldn't the Colts take RG3 instead of Luck?
