In Book V a battle is joined between the Trojans and the Greeks and there is a good dose of blood and gore. There are often complaints that tv shows and movies are too violent these days. Recitation of the Iliad would have been a somewhat comparable form of entertainment back then, and the graphic descriptions of gory injuries and deaths seem to fit right in with our modern desire to see these kinds of things portrayed. Some of the descriptions of deaths are repetitious which could be because the Iliad comes from the oral tradition and tricks would have been employed to aid the poet
