And to quote another poem by Sandburg:

I asked the professors who teach the meaning of life to tell
    me what is happiness.
And I went to famous executives who boss the work of
    thousands of men.
They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though
I was trying to fool with them
And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along
    the Desplaines river

I felt like this when the tsunami struck last December, too. This time was more intense, though, as it directly affected some people I love very much.

It was also the terrible environmental disaster that hit me, too. Wonderful Ol' New Orleans is now a poisonous and toxic soup that will wreak havoc on the soil and waters for many, many years to come. I'm as heartbroken about that as I am about the massive loss of life in that one fell swoop.

I dunno. I should've stayed on the prozac.

I feel good that I've been able to help people in some small and meaningful way, though.

And Ronnie's daughter has been located in Baton Rouge. She took quite a blow to her head along the way, but she is okay. Her little sister is travelling there to pick her up and bring her to her home in Washington.

I have been emotional, and the emotion is genuine. Yes, I've cried as I watched the news and worried about a good friend. I cried as I listened to cd's of the wonderful music and spirit that was New Orleans. I've cried at the state of humanity in all it's ugliness. And I've been relieved when I saw some semblence of human kindness and real help. I have a friend who lives in Auckland who is a black American Jazz/Blues musician. He is in his 60's now and he's beside himself with worry over one of his daughter's who is missing, and many friends that are still unaccounted for. I cried with him. I've read threads on various internet fora with a slant from the Libertarians and their callousness and I cried, and from Christians and their pious "god smote that wicked city" callousness and I cried. I'm reading the politics of the situation that goes years back before Katrina struck and in the aftermath and I cry. I'm trying to get word out on how people can help and it seems that it is more important to get help fix a broken mp3 player or play a google game or something and I cry.

Yes, I'm gutted, and it's real.

    Thank you for the welcome!

A "Postie" is a mail delivery person - summer's not far away, and I'd like a job that has me out riding my bike all day.

The smoking baby avatar will only be relevant to me for another 2 weeks, which is when I have my last day at my current job. After then, the stress factor will be greatly reduced and I will no longer feel like that infant.

Don't worry to much about the black helicopter, davidm. It appears to have brought her back safe and sound; although I shall be watching for any strange behavioural changes or chip implant scarring. I think she'll be okay, though - the pilot was such a nice man. 8)

Well, I'd better go show my sleepy face and make sure Holbling has managed to find himself some breakfast, etc.

    Ciao for now!

I'm Petra - an undereducated peasant from NZ.

My needs are as simple as my mind, and I aspire to be a "Postie" when I grow up.

I'll probably be fairly quiet - lurking and reading.

Thank you to Hugo for inviting me here.

Btw - Hugo is staying at my place in NZ at the moment, and today we admired a sleek black helicopter that came for my daughter.

Nice to meet you, and I look forward to learning from you all.
